The
English Man’s Trail
In 1847, the English landscapist/traveller Edward Lear covered this
itinerary that he described in his book: "Diario di un viaggio a
piedi in Calabria e nel Regno di Napoli" (Journal of a Jouney on
Foot in Calabria and the Kingdom of Naples) Editori Riuniti, Nov.1992:
" The travelling system that my companion
and I adopted, when these journals were written, was the most
simple and the least expensive one; as a matter of fact, we performed
the whole journey on foot. A horse to carry the little luggage
we took with us, and a guide. (..) Since there are no hotels in
those provinces, but on the carriage road running along the western
coast, the traveller shall always count on the hospitality of
some families, in every town he visits"
E. Lear, August 1847

Asprotrekking
"While
we carried on walking upstream, rocks appeared ever closer, up
to the top of high gorge cliff; it seemed that the towering shapes
of the Aspromonte were closing out the sky, the long furrows of
mountains dressed with thick forests. Our road went now on this
side, then on the other side of the stream, often at the level
of the river, between flowering oleander trees, of the largest
shape I have ever seen; they were often very high, between luxuriant
holm-oak trunks which were hanging down from the rocks. The sense
of mistery and solitude of these scenes, the deep solitude of
these mountains are such that neither a pen nor a pencil can describe
them"
E. Lear, August 1847

The
program organizer
What
is Naturaliter?
It is a small-size cooperative created on first July 1998 in Amendolea
(province of Reggio Calabria), but it has been working since 1986
with the name "Nuove Frontiere". It organizes excursions, trekking
activities, mostly in the Aspromonte National Park, but also on
the Orsomarso and in the Pollino National Park, and on the Aeolian
Islands.
What
does Naturaliter do?
It enhances natural and human resources through:
-
Preparing 2 to 15 day excursion (trekking) programmes for organized
groups;
-
Offering a network of rural hospitality structures (holiday farms,
furnished houses to let, forest houses) which use a kind of hospitality
inspired by bed and breakfast model.
-
Assisting groups daily (skilled guides and tour escorts of the
area;vans to transfer tourist luggage);
-
Actively involving local community in the hospitality of groups;
-
Fostering a cultural "immersion" of tourists into the local context,
organizing interactive meetings between: shepherds, Foresters,
craftsmen, farmers, housewifes, old people, ethnic/musical animators
and historical-cultural stakeholders.
Every
Year Two Thousand
tourists organized in groups, guided by Naturaliter, have visited
and learnt about the region of Calabria and the Aeolian Islands
in the period between the months of March and October (we would
like to mention in particular the six-year firm relationship of
trust with the local branch of the Italian Alpine Club – CAI -
of Pinerolo [province of Turin] and the sub-branch of the CAI
Edelweiss of Milan).
The
users of Naturaliter’s services are:
-
Local branches of the Italian Alpine Club from: Ivrea, Ponte
San Pietro (province of Bergamo), Siena, Teramo, Caserta, Potenza,
Campobasso, Salerno, Catania;
-
The local WWF-Italy groups from Genoa and Pisa, trekking groups
from Grassina and Bagno a Ripoli (province of Florence), Alpina
Excelsior from Bergamo;
-
School groups from northern Italy, Switzerland and from Greece;
the German tourist agencies Natur und Cultur and Wikinger Reisen.
